What a cookie is
A cookie is a small text file that a website saves on your device when you visit. It lets the site remember things between pages and across visits, such as whether you have already seen a notice or what you typed into a form. Some other technologies, like local storage in your browser, do a similar job, and we treat them the same way here.
How we think about them
We keep this simple. We use the few cookies needed to run the site and, if you allow it, a small amount of measurement so we can see which pages are worth keeping. We do not use cookies to build a profile of you or to follow you around other websites for advertising.
The cookies we use
Essential cookies. These make the website work. They remember your choices on this page, keep forms working while you fill them in, and help keep the site secure. The site cannot function properly without them, so they do not need your consent.
Analytics cookies. If you agree, we use a privacy-minded analytics tool to count visits and see which pages people read. This is collected in a grouped form and is not used to identify you. You can say no to these and the site will work exactly the same.
Embedded content. If we ever show a map or a video from another service, that service may set its own cookies. When it does, those cookies are governed by that company's own policy, not ours.
Your choices
You are in control. When required, we will ask before setting anything beyond the essential cookies, and you can change your mind later. You can also manage cookies in your browser at any time. Most browsers let you see what is stored, delete it, and block cookies from being set. The steps differ a little between browsers:
- In Chrome, Edge, and most others, look under Settings, then Privacy and security.
- In Safari, look under Settings, then Privacy.
- On a phone, the controls sit inside the browser app's own settings.
If you block or delete essential cookies, some parts of the site, such as remembering that you closed a notice, may not behave as expected.
Do Not Track
Some browsers can send a Do Not Track signal. There is no single agreed standard for how sites should respond to it, so we keep your choice simple instead: decline analytics and we will not set them.
How this fits with our privacy practices
Cookies can involve personal information, so this page sits alongside our Privacy page, which explains in full how we handle the information you give us and the rights you have under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.
Changes to this page
If we add or remove a cookie, we will update this page and change the date at the top.
