Who we are
Osteria del Lago is a family-owned restaurant at 55 Mill Street, Unit 23, in the Distillery District, Toronto, Ontario M5A 3C4. When we talk about "we" or "us" on this page, we mean the business that runs the restaurant. We handle personal information under Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, known as PIPEDA, and any Ontario rules that apply to us.
What we collect
We only ask for what we need to take a booking, answer a question, or send you something you asked for. Depending on what you do, that can include:
- Your name, email address, and phone number when you reserve a table or fill in a private dining inquiry.
- The date, time, party size, and any notes you add, such as allergies, dietary needs, or the occasion you are celebrating.
- Your email address if you sign up for the weekly menu.
- Basic technical details when you visit the site, such as the type of device and browser you use. There is more on that in our Cookies page.
We do not ask for, and would rather you did not send, any sensitive details beyond what is needed to look after you at the table. Allergy and dietary notes are the exception, and we treat those with care because they keep you safe.
Why we collect it
We use your information to:
- Confirm and manage your reservation, and reach you if something about your booking changes.
- Plan a private event with you and prepare a menu that suits your group.
- Note allergies and preferences so the kitchen and your server can look after you.
- Send the weekly menu if you asked for it, and nothing else unless you opt in.
- Keep the website working and understand which pages people find useful.
Consent
When you give us your details to make a booking or send an inquiry, you are agreeing to let us use them for that purpose. For the newsletter, we only add you after you enter your email and ask to join, and you can leave at any time using the link at the bottom of every email or by writing to us. You can withdraw consent for other uses by contacting us, though in some cases that may mean we can no longer hold your reservation.
Who sees it
Your information stays with our staff and the small number of service providers we rely on to run the restaurant. That can include a reservation system, an email provider for the weekly menu, and a payment processor for deposits on larger bookings. These providers act on our instructions and are only given what they need to do their job.
We do not sell your information, and we do not share it for anyone else's marketing. We will only hand information to a government body, regulator, or court when the law requires it.
Where it is stored
Some of the providers we use store data on servers outside Canada, including in the United States. Where that happens, your information may be subject to the laws of that country, and a foreign authority could in some cases gain access to it. We choose providers that take security seriously and we ask them to protect your information to a standard in line with Canadian expectations.
How long we keep it
We hold reservation and inquiry details only as long as we need them, usually for the season and a reasonable period after, in case you return or there is a question about a booking. Newsletter subscriptions stay active until you unsubscribe. When information is no longer needed, we delete it or render it anonymous.
How we protect it
We limit who on the team can see personal information, keep our systems password protected, and review the providers we work with. No system is perfect, but we take reasonable steps to guard against loss, theft, and unauthorised access.
Your rights
Under Canadian law you can ask us what personal information we hold about you, why we have it, and who we have shared it with. You can ask us to correct anything that is wrong. To make a request, write to us at the address below. We may need to confirm who you are before we respond, and we will reply within a reasonable time.
Children
The website and our bookings are meant for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children without a parent or guardian being involved in the booking.
Changes to this page
If we change how we handle personal information, we will update this page and change the date at the top. If the change is significant, we will make it clear.
How to reach us
If you have a question, a request, or a concern about your privacy, please contact us first. We would rather sort it out directly.
